In verses 35-38, what struck me was how “[Jesus] had compassion on them.” Compassion, mercy, empathy seem in short supply today. Social media is full of comments by people that immigrants are criminals, that it’s okay to treat them horribly because they are here illegally, that we should take care of ourselves and the heck with those who are more poor or needy or destitute. If we want “laborers for the harvest,” we need to face that we are all here because of God’s great mercy, lovingkindness, and compassion on us. How did empathy become a dirty word in many “Christian” spaces when we see our Lord exemplify it time and again. I want to err on the side of hesed because that’s the example we were left. He laid down his life and we aren’t willing to offer someone a bit of our wealth? That mindset is absurd
I’ve heard it taught that Jesus recovering sight to the blind was a fulfillment of something only the Messiah would be able to do. What are your thoughts on that issue?

I think it’s more appropriate to say it’s the kind of thing God was expected to do when he returned.
